Liberian Adoptions Suspended

The president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, announced on January 26 that all adoptions from Liberia are now halted. Her statement included the following: “We have thus suspended the adoption program until laws, policies and proper guidelines have been established and we have asked our concerned friends and partners in the United States to be patient as we try to correct the serious malpractices which exist. We expect the National Social Welfare Policy and National Adoption Act which will be submitted to you during the course of the year, will provide guidance and prevent such abuses in the future.”

Though this is a serious setback for the children of Liberia, we pray that this move will in the future ensure that adoptions from Liberia will be safer and surer for the children involved, and free from the taints of corruption and malfeasance that have been alleged in the past. Please join us in praying for the waiting children of Liberia and for the families here in the States who are now caught in this unfortunate situation.
